general course information
From Mrs. Clark's Syllabus:
NEW Classroom Procedures
The amount of time provided to complete projects and written work in this class will be planned to coincide with the amount of class time provided before a due date. Mrs. Clark is very flexible and many times works with students on an individual basis for determining due dates. Generally speaking, students should have more than enough time at school to complete ALL work assigned.
Beginning of Class: Come in quietly and keep your belongings with you. Make sure cell phones are off and in bookbags upon entering the classroom. Place belongings underneath your table. Once seated, the instructor will allow one table at a time to go get sketchbooks from the designated shelf.
Studio Time: Utilize your time wisely and be mindful of your working voice! (just above a whisper) The instructor will be circulating the room during this studio time so feel free to ask for help. If students need to leave for any reason during this time, they will sign out in the log. Only one student will leave at a time. If leaving class becomes a habit, the instructor will begin to keep a count of individuals who leave often and will conference with the student if needed. NEW THIS YEAR: Mrs. Clark has her own studio space. Students are not allowed to enter the studio unless invited by Mrs. Clark. Conferences with students may happen in the space during studio time.
End of Class: The last 5-10 minutes of class are for cleaning up and checking in with Mrs. Clark about plans for the next day. Put all your materials back in your bag and be ready and quiet- the instructor will collect everything from your table. Once the table is clear, you will be given Clorox wipes to sanitize the table before you leave. Wait for the instructor to dismiss each table before gathering your belongings at the end of class. Wait to be dismissed, do not leave just because the bell has rung.
Classroom Rules
It should be everyone’s goal to see that each student has the opportunity to learn and work in a safe and positive environment. In order for the art room atmosphere to remain positive students should:
Be respectful to those who choose to wear a face covering
Be respectful of Mrs. Clark and everything in the art room including art materials
Act in a mature and responsible way
Come to class prepared
Leave food and drinks outside of the room (unless otherwise given permission)
Leave their cell phones and all other electronic devices in bookbags and out of sight

I created this poster as an assignment while completing my masters degree at JMU and I just learned a new program called Thinglink to make it interactive. When the buttons are clicked, a link appears to take you to the information I have pre-decide students should see about each artist.
I think of these five artists as "must- teach" people and hope that all art students will be familiar with their work before they leave my class. I teach a broad spectrum of artists as well as wide range of mediums. I attempt to give all students a well rounded art education experience at the middle school level in hopes that they continue their art education beyond my classroom.

the 5 components that make an exceptional student
adapted from art teacher Ms. Burke at Needham HIgh shcool, MA
1. Respect . Yourself, others, all art work, supplies, and the positive environment that we all try to keep safe. Participate in the creative process journey and in class discussions. Share what you do and help your peers.
2. Investment. Are you motivated to be the best you can be? Listen to others, keep an open mind and go the extra mile!
3. Save Everything! Do not throw anything away, including what you think of as mistakes. You never know what could spark an idea. I don't believe in art mistakes. Date and save everything.
4. Ask for Help. Be a self advocate. I love teaching art and want to help you through your process. Ask for help when you need it and remember, art is a process, not a product.
5. Process Expectations. Our art room is a place where creative learning and thinking takes place. It is important to me that students give 100% to the process whether or not they are happy with the resulting work. Creative thinking takes brainstorming, hands on activity, critiques, and collaboration. Be sure your attitude is positive and you cannot fail in my class!

During the 9 weeks 6th graders take art, During the course, we dive a little deeper than students may be used to in elementary art. We discuss personal definitions of art and personal meaning in our work. The goal in 6th grade art is to explore and have fun!
7th graders who choose art can take the course for a semester. During this time, they explore various art careers and mediums in the art world. They become familiar with contemporary as well as historic master artists. Students are always encouraged to think for themselves but be inspired by the world around them.
8th graders who choose art as one of their electives take the course for a semester. By this time, most of these students have experienced previous years of art and have already formulated their own opinions of themselves as artists. My job is to take them out of their comfort zone, challenge, them, help them, and allow them to progress as individuals and as artists. We focus in 8th grade on developing technical skills and creative thinking that will help them succeed in whatever field they choose to study. As part of that VA state standards, 8th graders create a portfolio they can build upon as they take their art career into high school and beyond.
Art Tag students have been tested and have passed as "Talented and Gifted" by Accomack County. Most students enter Art Tag during elementary school, however if I feel the need at the middle school level to test students, I do so.
